AMD netbooks: Acer Aspire One 521 and Gateway LT22 hands-on
May 27th
Sure, Acer may already have the Ion 2-powered Aspire One 532g in its arsenal, but who’s going to complain about two more HD-capable, 10-inch netbooks? Showing some serious love to AMD, the Acer Aspire One 521 and Gateway LT22 both pack new 1.2GHz AMD V105 processors along with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics. The latter is what had us most impressed when we caught some time with the duo at the Netbook Summit — the 521 and LT22 handled 1080p WMV video and light gaming without any stuttering. We’ll hold our real performance conclusions until we can test the battery life on these bad boys, but other than that they look like decent netbook contenders with the standard 1GB of RAM and 160GB hard drives. And unlike the typical Atom netbook, they have HDMI ports. We can’t say we’re the biggest fans of the 521′s in-your-face Aspire One branding on its glossy cover, but the LT2203 delights with its textured matte lid. No word from Acer on the availability and pricing of these here in the US, but hit the gallery below for some imagery, or the source link even further below for a video of these two in action.
Seven months later, the Nikon D3s is still a unicorn
May 27th
we dare you to find a US model Nikon D3s for sale anywhere among them (spoiler: you can’t). What’s remarkable about it is that the mighty 12.1 megapixel beast has technically been on sale since late November of last year, and yet some seven months later, many top-tier photography retailers still list the camera as a pre-order or “coming soon” as though it’s never even hit retail to begin with. Well, it has — sort of — but it’s been available in such ridiculously small quantities that your best bet has been to score a gray market unit off eBay (often at a price above the US MSRP of $5,199) that lacks a manufacturer warranty. On a precision machine this expensive and complex, that’s not a very wise thing to wave off.
It’s not at all unusual for new flagship DSLRs from Nikon and Canon to be backordered to the extreme (in fact, it’s the norm), but the D3s’ situation is pretty unprecedented — and there’s no letup in sight. We spoke to J&R this past weekend about the tight inventory and we were told that they receive maybe “one or two” D3s bodies every couple of weeks, but not on a regular schedule; they just get them when they get them, and naturally, they’re sold out by the time the boxes roll into the store. Folks browsing J&R’s website don’t even stand a chance.

Samsung Galaxy S will hit Asia in June, get Froyo later
May 27th
Samsung has just let the cat out of the bag regarding its top of the line Galaxy S, which is set to make its global debut in Asian markets this June. Unsubsidized, this 4-inch beastie will cost you S$1,098 (or around $775), which might be a little on the steep side, but then this is one of only a pair of Super AMOLED handsets on the market and Samsung makes the other one. And in case you want an alternative closer to home, Amazon’s German portal is now listing the Galaxy S for pre-order at €649, which works out to about the same price. The best news from today, however, is probably Samsung’s official confirmation that the phone will be getting an Android 2.2 upgrade at some point in its future. No specifics are given as yet, but we’ll take our Froyo whenever and wherever we can get it.

Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 now on sale, offers less value for more money
May 27th
If you set your heart on the sexy, swiveling Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 desktop when you saw it at CES, the time has come to lay down your cash — the all-in-one PC is now available for order. It’s kind of a shame that it’ll take eighteen days to arrive on your doorstep after you write the check, and we’re not terribly jazzed that there are only two last-gen Core 2 Duo Mobile configurations on offer for hundreds of dollars more than Lenovo originally promised, but hey — form over function, right? Just make sure you opt for the $950 version if you plan to watch any LOST reruns on the glossy 21.5-inch screen, as Lenovo no longer includes a TV tuner in the base model. Yeah, what with the company calling it a “hi-def TV” and all, we’re as surprised by that omission as you.
The mouse ain’t dead…yet: five of the best mice reviewed
May 26th

For over thirty years the computer mouse ruled over the kingdom of computer navigation. Despite losing its rubber ball and cord over the years, the peripheral lived a long, full life of being pushed across desks and tables getting the cursor where it needed to go. It died today from neglect as it was abandoned en masse for touchpads and touch-based computers.

Nokia N8 launching August 24, we hear; Amazon Germany taking €470 pre-orders
May 24th
We know, we know, you were banking on taking an N8 with you when you go summering in Cape Cod in July, but that might be a tall order because we’re hearing from a trusted source that August 24 has been pegged as the big release date for Nokia’s Symbian^3-powered beast. Pricing had already been announced at €370 ($465), but if you’re interested in shedding an extra hundred for no apparent reason, Amazon Germany is now officially taking pre-orders for €469.50 ($590) in black — just one of the five N8 shades Espoo will be pushing around the world. We think we’d recommend holding off on signing up for Amazon’s enticing deal here, quite honestly — especially considering the magnetic attraction we’ve got to that totally unapologetic orange version.
