Samsung U200 all-in-one desktop hands-on

0

Here’s another exhibit that we could (literally) touch at the British Museum today — Samsung’s new all-in-one touchscreen PC, the U200. We won’t go into another pixel density rant about the 20-inch, but the colors and optical touch sensitivity were good. As for the keyboard, it seemed to have similar issues we dealt with on the P580 laptop, but at least you can just throw it out and get a better one with the U200. Anyhow, help yourself to the rest of our hands-on photos.

Lenovo’s eco-friendly ThinkPad L Series arrives cheaper and faster than expected

0

Lenovo may not have had its ThinkPad L Series laptops out in time for Earth Day, but the company’s found an arguably even better incentive to help you help them save the environment: a nice fat upgrade and a small sale to commemorate their new availability. While we were originally told the $649 ThinkPad L412 would house a lowly Celeron P4500 inside its post-consumer-content housing, it appears Lenovo has decided against using that chip entirely — cue applause — in favor of the 2.13GHz Core i3-330. What’s more, both the 14-inch L412 and 15.6-inch L512 also come with double the memory (2GB in total) and are presently on sale for just $599. Not bad for a slab of recycled plastic, sand and assorted metals, eh?

Samsung P580 business laptop hands-on

0

Boy, Samsung’s been keeping us busy today — in addition to the Q330 and Q530, the company was also showing the P580 business laptop at the British Museum today. The particular unit we played with had a vibrant 15.6-inch 1,366 x 768 matte screen, although a higher resolution and greater viewing angle would’ve made it a prettier package. To our further disappointment, the keyboard was nowhere as good as the Q-series’ chiclet offering — we kept pressing neighboring keys by accident, and the spacebar’s right-hand side often failed to pick up our input. An isolated issue? Only time will tell — you guys might have better luck when this bad boy eventually arrives in the stores.

Apple starts rolling out international iPad pre-orders

0

What’s that, you say? The iPad pre-order button is now propagating itself over on Apple’s global assortment of online stores? The Australian retail is already taking your hard-earned change, while we just saw first-hand the UK variant go down, go up with an iPad pre-order icon on the front page, then subsequently hidden again behind a yellow sticky note within minutes of this writing. We imagine the rest of the stores will be following suit (if they haven’t already). Ladies and gentlemen of the pro-Apple persuasion, better double check your bank accounts — in case you forgot, the full launch is May 28th.

AMD to ship chips in 109 laptops this year?

0

Fresh off its world-dominating streak in the desktop graphics market, AMD set sights on notebook territory; now, according to “people familiar with the matter,” the company’s scored a big win there, too. Sources told Reuters that the chipmaker’s notebook CPUs will power 109 different laptops over the months to come, compared to only 40 laptop models last year. It seems part of the newfound success is attributable to HP — which announced twelve mainstream ‘tops just last week — but we’re more interested in the mysterious quad-core Phenom II X4 machines leaking out the likes of Acer and Dell. What can we say? We’re suckers for a surprise, especially of the portable, multi-threaded variety.

Sony VAIO P Series gets an accelerometer, touchpad

0

Well, we did have some strong evidence to suggest that Sony was planning a design update to its VAIO P Series, but there happens to be a lot more than fresh aesthetics going on with the new 8-inch lappie. Sure, it gets a new matte lid that’s available in five different shades, but Sony has also updated the 1.3-pound P Series with an optical touchpad and accelerometer. The former is built into the LCD bezel and, as the picture above shows, is all about navigating the desktop by just holding the screen – the pad is on the right bezel while the right / left mouse buttons are on the left. The accelerometer is probably the most interesting addition – you can flip the device vertically to read documents, but also tilt it to the left or right to move forward or backward while surfing the web. Pretty cool stuff, and there’s even more: it’s been given a faster Intel Atom Z560 processor option, though the entry-level unit has a slightly-slower Z530 CPU. Still waiting for US pricing to see if Sony can tempt us with its notoriously expensive VAIO P when it begins shipping in June. We’ll have a piping hot review of the new VAIO P coming up later this morning. So, will you hit the break for the official PR, or just wait for the review? Decisions, decisions

Borders’ Kobo eReader available for pre-order, ships June 17th

0

Looking for a no-frills alternative to the Kindle or Nook? For $150, you’ll probably find it in the Kobo eReader — now available for purchase at Borders, and shipping June 17th. We went hands-on with Kobo in March and rather enjoyed the barebones aesthetic; though an early review cited long load times, we thought the 6-inch E Ink slate got the basics just about right. That’s just us, though — if you get it for Father’s Day as Borders clearly suggests, we’re not sure your picky old man will agree.

Barbie’s Samsung X170 thin-and-light is her only part made to scale

0

As long as we’re corrupting our daughters with an improbable baseline for bodily perfection, we might as well extend that reach to portable computing, right? Meet the Samsung X-series Barbie Special Edition with Intel Core 2 Duo CULV proc, 4GB of memory, 500GB disk, and scads of Barbie-branded trinkets and bloatware. The ultimate irony here is that the X170 is one of the least attractive and chubbiest thin-and-light devices we’ve ever seen. But hey, if you’re lucky maybe it’ll ship with a free copy of Cosmo to complete the cycle.
