Sony updates PS3 to version 4.00 ahead of PS Vita launch

Sony is setting the table for the PlayStation Vita today, with the release of a new PS3 update. With version 4.00, rolling out now, PS3 users will be able to share content like music, video and images with the forthcoming Vita, scheduled to launch in Japan on December 17th. The refresh also allows gamers to save PS Vita games and data on their PS3 hard drives, while updating their handheld software using the PS3′s network. Sammy’s current Cortex A9-based chips are hardly slackers — the Galaxy Note already proved that to any lingering doubters. Nevertheless, the next-gen Exynos 5250 SoC promises to double that sort of performance, by harnessing two Cortex-A15 chips clocked at 2GHz each, along with a GPU that can output resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA). It’s like big.LITTLE computing, except without the LITTLE. Samsung reckons it’ll start mass producing the 5250 for use in high-end tablets by the second quarter of next year, which should be just in time to stop NVIDIA from getting too cocky.

Ricoh’s modular GXR camera getting new 16 megapixel APS-C unit with 24-85mm lens

A new lens for your DSLR or Micro Four Thirds camera may make you feel like you have a whole new camera, but that’s really the case with the interchangeable units for the Ricoh GXR. The latest addition to the modular camera’s bag of tricks a new 16 megapixel unit with an APS-C sensor, which comes paired with a 24-85mm zoom lens (f3.5-5.5 aperture). Unfortunately, Ricoh isn’t getting specific with a price a specific release date (saying only early 2012), but photographer Cristian Sorega reports on his blog that Ricoh will make an official announcement at CES in January, with a release set for January 20th.
Acer’s 27-inch HR274H monitor promises to do 2D-to-3D conversion on the fly

It likely won’t win over anyone who isn’t too fond of 3D to begin with, but those looking for some additional quasi-3D content beyond the standard fare now have a new option to consider in the form of Acer’s 27-inch HR274H monitor. It not only includes a set of passive, polarized 3D glasses, but what Acer describes as its own “chip-based solution” that promises to convert all 2D content to 3D in real time (it can be switched on and off on the monitor itself). Unfortunately, there’s no word yet as to how well the effect works, and the monitor’s specs are otherwise decidedly ordinary for the rather high $599 price tag — you’ll just get a TN panel with a standard 1920 x 1080 resolution. Is there any tablet that’s hotter than the Transformer Prime right now? (Please, don’t say the Kindle Fire.) For weeks we geeks, early adopters and people who love their tech toys have been awaiting this, and none too patiently. Make no mistake: this will be one of the slickest products we test this year and it isn’t just because the original Transformer had such an inventive design. The Prime is the first device packing NVIDIA’s hot-off-the-presses Tegra 3 SoC, making it the world’s first quad-core tablet. This comes with promises of longer-than-ever runtime and blazing performance (five times faster than Tegra 2, to be exact), all wrapped in a package measuring just 8.3mm (0.33 inches) thick — even skinnier than the iPad 2 or Galaxy Tab 10.1. Throw in specs like a Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display, eight megapixel rear camera and a confirmed ICS update in the pipe and even we seen-it-all Engadget editors were drooling.
All of which means we dropped just everything when a 32GB Prime showed up on our doorstep earlier this week, and soon enough, you’ll have your chance to nab one too. ASUS announced today that the WiFi-only models will be available through online sellers the week of December 19th, and in retail the week after. (No word yet on 3G versions for the US just yet.) It’ll start at $499 for the 32GB model — not bad considering five hundred bucks is the going rate for a high-end tablet with 16GB of storage. From there you can get a 64GB number for $599, while that signature keyboard dock will set you back a further $149. Worth it? Read on to find out.

It’s been around in a few different hues, and has since grown into a TouchWiz UX kind of outfit, and we’re guessing it’s about time Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 found its way into our weekly HWYC feature. It’s undoubtedly the Android slate to beat, even today, but that doesn’t mean that it’s spit-shine perfect. Details are still sketchy here, but the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Amazon‘s looking to launch a Netflix-like subscription service for digital books, much to the chagrin of some publishers. According to unnamed sources familiar with the matter, Amazon is currently “in talks” with several publishers about the program, which would provide access to an online library in exchange for an unspecified annual fee. The insiders also claim that the service would be available for Amazon Prime subscribers (who currently pay $79 per year for free shipping and access to shows and movies) and that the proposed library would feature primarily older works, with monthly restrictions on the number of books a subscriber could read for free. Publishers would reportedly pocket a “substantial fee” for signing on to the program, though some are reluctant to participate, for fear that doing so would “downgrade the value of the book business,” according to one publishing exec. In fact, it remains unclear whether any publishers have thrown their hats in the ring, but we’ll certainly be on the lookout for any developments.
