Marvell prototypes a few good Android tablets, we go hands-on
0It’s a precarious time to show off new tech at this point — can’t make it to stores in time for holidays, guaranteed to get more exposure if debuted at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. Not that Marvell cares, since its expertise is semiconductors — the stuff with which OEM’s dreams are made. The company was on hand at Pepcom showing off some reference designs for HD tablets with Android 2.2: 10-inch, 1280 x 780 resolution, and an Armada 600 chip. Reportedly it can also output to two external monitors, but all we got to see was one hooked up mirroring our game of Angry Birds. Thin and light, if a bit flimsy in its prototype form. We’ve been told the reference design has been used for a handful of products that’ll show up on the CES show floor. Also on hand were a couple of more education-targeted slates with Armada 100 chips and price points planned in the $100 range (Moby, OLPC, is that you?). Check out our hands-on pics below!
Onkyo outs 3G Windows 7 tablet for Japan only
0Onkyo‘s outed a new Windows 7 tablet — seems to be all the rage these days — with KDDI 3G onboard. The 11.6-inch TW317A7 tablet (which is essentially a re-badge of the ExoPC Slate which we reviewed) boasts a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, plus Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, card reader, two USB 2.0 ports, and stereo speakers. The 11.6-inch multitouch display has a 1366 x 768 resolution, and the tablet brings with it Onkyo’s new custom ExTOUCH software which is apparently designed to enhance finger input in the OS and boasts a dedicated app launcher. The TW317A7 will be available in Japan very soon — as in this week — but Onkyo has yet to announce pricing.
Dell Inspiron Duo tablet could be with us next week
0Alright, we know AMD’s busy showing off its Atom killer, but there’s still a little life left in Intel’s netbook stalwart, which has been harnessed to its fullest in Dell’s screen-flipping Duo tablet / netbook. And the good news is that we apparently won’t have to wait too long to see that zany concoction out in the real world. Well placed sources have informed CNET that Dell intends to release the Inspiron Duo at some point next week, potentially on November 23rd, while pre-sale information should be dished out later this week, alongside Microsoft’s announcement of a new store opening. Things are moving along nice and swiftly, it would seem.
Update: And just to fan those flames of desire a little more, the Duo has shown up in Microsoft’s latest cloud computing advert. See it after the break.
BlackBerry PlayBook first hands-on! (video)
0RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie actually declined to show off the his company’s tablet today on the Web 2.0 Summit stage, but in private he was more than kind, treating us to a nice long glimpse at the BlackBerry PlayBook in a quaint hotel hallway. We only got to heft the one-pound slate for a few seconds, but we got the basic feel of the device in the hand — warm to the touch, solid if a little plasticky, with a responsive glass touchscreen up top and a bottom that’s mildly rubberized. Balsillie didn’t bother to locate the “module cavity” for us, but he did try to explain where those 5300mAh lithium ion cells might hide — we suspect the CEO exaggerated only slightly when he told us “it’s all battery and glass inside.” He then wrenched the device forcefully from our unprepared hands (at least that’s how we like to think it went down) and proceeded to let us film a brief film showing off the QNX and Air-based OS juggling a spreadsheet, photo gallery and some beautiful underwater footage all at the same time. Hit the break for that hastily-shot video.
Lenovo IdeaPad U260 and its 12.5-inch display head stateside for $899
0Confirmed: Lenovo LePad headed to US in 2011
0Lenovo led us to believe that our LePad chances weren’t terribly good, but CEO Yang Yuanqing recently told the Wall Street Journal that the Android tablet is indeed slated for a 2011 US launch. Though Lenovo’s COO Rory Read was pretty clear that the LePad wouldn’t ship stateside until a tablet-ready version of Android was ready to go, it seems the company’s now confident that Google will deliver the goods. However, our gain is apparently China’s loss, as the publication reports that the slate’s been pushed into 2011 (as opposed to this December) in its country of origin as well. What’s a multinational computer corporation to do?

ASUS Eee Tablet to be renamed, will head to market in early 2011
0ASUS Eee PC 1215T with AMD Neo on sale now
0Been waiting on an Eee PC 1215N with an AMD Neo processor? Or how about an Eee PC 1015T with a 12.1-inch display? We know, you need a damn almanac to keep up with all of ASUS’ netbooks, but if you have in fact been waiting on the respective strengths of those two Eee PC variants, the company’s got you covered with its new 1215T. Forgoing the Intel Atom / NVIDIA Ion 2 combo for a single core 1.7GHz AMD Athlon K125 processor, the 12.1-inch notbook (our word for a machine that’s not really a netbook anymore) packs 2GB of RAM, an 320GB hard drive and Windows 7 Home Premium. The system looks to have the same chassis as the $485 Eee PC 1215N we reviewed not too long ago, but instead rings up at around $436 on Amazon right now. We obviously haven’t tested the AMD version nor have we seen any reviews, but we’d venture to guess that while you may save $50, you’ll give up the better battery life of the Intel / Ion-powered 1215N — the AMD Neo laptops we’ve tested haven’t lasted longer than four hours on a charge. That’s just our hunch, but hey, don’t let us stop you from hitting that source link and ordering one right now.
