MSI CR650 review

0

It was a long time coming, but when it finally arrived, AMD’s highly anticipated Fusion APU ripped through the laptop market like a bull on steroids. Just this month, the chipmaker announced that the platform made up nearly half its notebook shipments, and no doubt contributed heavily to its $1.61 billion in Q1 revenues. In the past four months, we’ve seen its superior integrated graphics working on a slew of smaller machines, but it seems Fusion wanted more.

Back in January, Toshiba announced that it would bring the E-240 APU to a 15.6-inch budget notebook, and just a few weeks later MSI followed suit with its own announcement, saying it planned to put a Zacate E-350 APU, incorporating Radeon HD 6310 graphics, in its CR650. We’ve spent some time with Lenovo’s ThinkPad X120e and HP’s Pavilion dm1z, both sporting 11.6-inch screens and E-350 APUs, but we’ve yet to experience the force of Fusion on a larger device. Naturally, when the opportunity presented itself, we jumped on the chance to find out how a big rig like the CR650 would stack up against its dainty predecessors. Will Fusion’s wonder chip offer the same performance in a $500, 15.6-inch laptop? Or will it fail to bring its beastly force to a big budget machine? Hop on past the break to find out

DXG-5D7V, ‘the only 3D video camcorder,’ now available for preorder

0

Panasonic may have the first 3D camcorder we’d actually ever consider purchasing, but technically speaking DXG has been sitting on the stereoscopic gold mine for months. This past week, the budget camera company’s 3D View pistol cam got real, in a Hammacher-Schlemmer package that’ll set you back $600. That outlay buys you not only the twin-lens VGA shooter you see above, but also a companion 7-inch, 800 x 480 3D media player, both of which are outfitted with glasses-free parallax barrier LCD screens. It’s not a terrible deal considering the alternatives on offer, but we’re not down with the $200 luxury tax Hammacher and company tacked on top, and we’re a little wary about the way that ram is staring at us. Cameras are expected to ship August 6th; press release after the break.

Logitech Harmony 650 remote review

Logitech Harmony 650 remote review

Fewer products are more appropriately named than the Logitech Harmony series of smart remotes. They do wonderful things to take home entertainment systems, comprised of a disparate jumble of mismatched devices, and turn them into peaceful entities that work together for the betterment of your living room — you half expect doves with olive branches in their mouths to fly out of the box when you get one. Alas, there are neither birds nor branches included with the company’s latest entrants to the series, the 600 and 650 announced two weeks ago, but still they offer the best value amongst the current Harmony lineup. Can they broker successful negotiations amongst all your devices? Read on to find out.

GefenTV Wireless for HDMI slings 1080p over 60GHz airwaves

1

The wireless HD war is far from over, but 60GHz is sure making a push for becoming the top dog in the race. Gefen’s latest relies on SiBEAM‘s wireless tech in order to transfer uncompressed 1080p footage up to 30 feet sans lag. You simply connect one box to an HDMI-equipped source (like, say, your minty fresh Blu-ray player) and one box to your HDMI-equipped HDTV; from there, you can watch in amazement as the signal is beamed from one unit to the other without any cords in between. ‘Course, this whole solution would seem a lot more elegant if these wireless modules were just baked into said BD deck and the aforementioned television, but hey, the retrofitters take what the retrofitters can get. It’s all yours right now for just under a grand.

Intel’s CE 3100 finally gets a shipping partner in Yuixx media player

0

Intel’s CE 3100 multimedia processor has been hanging out at trade floor shows for months upon months now, but at long last the slab has a partner product that’ll be shipping to general consumers. Conceptronics’ Yuixx HD media player has just reached the point in its life where shipment is imminent, and in speaking with the firm, we learned that’ll hit the streets of Amsterdam at the end of this month. The rest of Europe is expected to see it in February, while Americans will have to wait until it hits the FCC in March before getting any closer. Unlike some other set-top boxes on the market now, this one relies heavily on its own Widget Channel to bring web-based content to televisions, and pumping out 1080p material ain’t no thang for it. Head on past the break for the full release and a promo video, and look for a little hands-on action as the CES show floor opens.

WiGig Alliance completes multi-gigabit 60GHz wireless specification: let the streaming begin

0

The WiGig Alliance captured our imaginations back in May, but now it seems that the world of multi-gigabit streaming is so close, we can taste the data slipping over our tonguea on their way to the next access point. Put simply, the specification that the group has been toiling on over the past few months is finally complete, and while some of its members have been prototyping wares along the way, this 1.0 announcement effectively opens the flood gates for partnering outfits to implement it into their gear. In case you’re curious as to how 60GHz will help you, have a listen: WiGig enables wireless transfer rates more than ten times faster than today’s fastest wireless LAN, and it’s completely backward compatible with existing WiFi devices. As we’ve already seen with those totally bodacious dual-band (2.4GHz / 5GHz) routers, having another band with this kind of speed potential can only mean great things for the future.

Imation Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive reviewed

0

Imation was set to announce its first-ever Wireless USB hard drive a year ago, but it lost a dear friend shortly before it materialized and we’d heard nothing since then. Today Imation has returned — holding hands with its new partner, Staccato — to release the Pro WX 1.5 terabyte Wireless USB hard drive for both Windows and Mac. At $449.99, though, we thought to ourselves: does the Pro WX offer something extraordinary for the premium price? Or are you better off with a NAS device like Apple’s infamous Time Capsule? We ran some quick tests to find out — do read on for some juicy results.

Xbox 360 Wireless N adapter is really real, out this week in US for $100

0

Microsoft’s releasing a Wireless N Networking Adapter for the Xbox 360? Get out of town! … Oh, wait, we’ve seen it. Constantly. For the last two months. Ah well, let’s just all be happy to see it finally appear on US store shelves, putting an end to this sordid saga and supporting 802.11a/b/g/n for a copper Lincoln under $100. As Joystiq reports, the old 802.11b/g model is slowly being shown the curb, with the current stock being discounted at $80 while supplies last.

Samsung’s Tango robot vacuum uses cameras to clean your floors, duvet covers

Samsung's Tango robot vacuum uses cameras to clean your floors, duvet covers

Just because a Samsung vacbot never cleaned your floors doesn’t mean they’re not out there somewhere, attacking dust on hardwood and carpet — and apparently Egyptian cotton too if the above picture is anything to go by. This Tango is the latest from the company, following in the tracks of the Furot and Hauzen and sharing their dual spinny brush design. Tango is said to use a 30fps camera to tell where he’s going, a gyro to keep a sense of direction, and crash sensors that now can detect furniture and feet from up to 2cm away. Prices will range from ₩500,000 to ₩700,000 and, though that equates to between $425 and $600 American, the stores these will be available in probably won’t take dollars.
