Acer launching thin, Calpella-based notebooks this summer?

The progression of ever-faster notebooks seems to have dwindled, but the quest for thinner and lighter goes on. Acer is said to be finding the balance between those two goals with its next suite of thin performers, starting with a range of mid- and high-end portables based on Intel’s Calpella series of processors, the Nehalem spin-off that we haven’t heard much about lately. Sizes are said to be 13-, 14-, and 15-inches, all will be manufactured by Wistron, and all said to be one inch thin at their thinnest point — hopefully not much thicker elsewhere if they want to turn heads. These higher-performing machines will eventually phase out Acer’s CULV offerings, which apparently have had unimpressive sales thanks to a perceived lack of performance by consumers. We can’t imagine where they got that idea…
Acer Aspire 3811TZ and 3811TZG get Greenpeace stamp of approval

So Acer’s new Aspire 3811TZ and Aspire 3811TZG may not be puke-green like Sony’s VAIO W Eco, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t some of the greenest — as in eco-friendly — laptops out there. Part of the company’s thin-and-light Timeline series, the two 13.3-inch laptops have been named by Greenpeace as being completely free of those bad-for-the-environment materials, including PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and BFR (brominated flame retardants). Powered by Intel ULV Core 2 Duo CPUs, they are more power-efficient than most and last longer on a charge. There doesn’t seem to be an official statement from Acer on availability and price on these models, but we assume like the rest of the Timeline bunch there will be models both north and south of a grand.

Acer’s maintained a steady lead in the race to sell as many netbooks as possible in the past year. That’s largely because the Taiwanese manufacturer figured out early that basic netbooks at lower prices would fly off shelves. And the new Aspire One 532h doesn’t mess with that formula: the 10.1-inch netbook packs a new Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter, 160GB hard drive and a six-cell battery all for $299. Yeah, we said $299. But at $100 less than most of the competition, how does the 532h compare in quality? What sacrifices, if any, are made for the lower price? Acer rolls out new budget-focused Core i3 and Core i5 Aspire laptops

Those Intel Core i3 and Core i5 mobile processors we’ve been hearing about for quite awhile now are finally finding a home, and one of their first stops is Acer’s Aspire lineup. Notoriously known as solid performing and affordable rigs, both the new 15.6-inch Aspire AS5740 and 17-inch Aspire AS7740 will start at under $800. Not too shabby considering the $750 AS7740 configuration includes a 2.14GHz Intel Core i3-330M CPU, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium and a Blu-ray drive. While the $750 AS5740 doesn’t have Blu-ray, its got a 2.2GHz Intel Core i5-430M processor, 4GB of RAM, and discrete ATI graphics. Acer will offer lots of variations on the specs, but at the end of the day these guys are talking performance and a price we can get behind.
Acer gets in the Olympic spirit with special edition Aspire Timeline 1810TZ

Lenovo really went to town with its Olympics-branded gear, but while Acer is a major Winter Olympics partner (and keeping the spot for 2012 as well), it’s taking a bit more of a tame approach at the outset. This Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ, for instance, merely slaps some silver rings on the lid and calls it a day. Pretty classy, and the price isn’t bad: $580 for a 11.6-inch CULV laptop with 3GB of RAM and Windows 7. Perfect for the multitasking ski jumper in your life.

It’s no secret that we’re facing down a tidal wave of new netbooks at CES in January, with all signs pointing to Intel unleashing its brand new graphics-friendly Atom N450 chip based on its new-generation Pine Trail platform. So, before we get all netbook’d out, let’s allow ourselves a small amount of excitement at this Acer Aspire One 532 spotted within the bowels of the internet (Acer’s driver pages). A bit of Google work uncovered specs that include an Atom N450 processor with Intel GMA 3150 and a 10.1-inch 1280 x 720 screen. It’s been listed for 299 Euros in one of these random, bean-spilling online stores, so that gives a decent reason to hope that a new generation of Atom won’t mean a major leap in pricing. Is that a whiff of holiday optimism we smell in the air?

Acer, unlike HTC, is not so well known for their Android handsets. They may have one in the form of the Acer Liquid, but this has yet to become available in the market. However, the rookie handset maker is planning to change that come 2010 where they plan to introduce around 8-10 new smartphones with a more level distribution between Windows Mobile and the Android platform. We’re not sure who will actually be getting the bigger piece of the pie or if it will be a tie at the end of the day, but one thing is for certain though, more Acer Android handset will be available in 2010. Of course, Acer is still a newbie in the mobile phone industry, but hey, we’re still glad to see them go full out with Android as this will definitely help intensify the rivalry in this growing segment of the market。
Acer Aspire Timeline 1820PT convertible hits Australia, gets specs

Acer’s Aspire Timeline 1820PT lit up our radar today after going official in Italy and arriving unheralded on the company’s Australian site. Yet another 11.6-inch convertible notebook, this guy ships with Windows 7 Home Premium and features both multitouch display and touchpad, up to 1366 x 768 display resolution, an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 (1.2GHz) processor, GMA X4500MHD, up to 8GB RAM and 320GB storage, 3G, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. In addition to all that, this bad boy sports the usual ins ‘n outs, including HDMI and a card reader, and boasts an eight hour battery life. Sounds like the company’s 1820P, eh? We thought so too. No word yet on price or stateside availability, but you can get a closer look in the gallery below, and be sure to peep the specs after the break.
Acer wants the Aspire 8940 to be your Core i7-packing portable of choice

You’d think you’ve seen all the Windows 7 holiday laptops to last you through this yuletide season, but in comes Acer with another offering, the Core i7-packing Aspire 8940. The 18.4-inch 1080p widescreen monitor brings with it a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M, Blu-ray drive, 600GB HDD, and 4GB RAM. Let’s also throw in a webcam, 802.11 a/b/g Draft-N, webcam, multi-card reader, HDMI and eSATA ports and a 8-cell Li-Ion battery for good measure. Quite a hefty number, so expect a little bit of workout if you’re wanting to haul this around. Suggested price is $1,349 and all we know of the release date is “holiday season” so it should be safe to add this to your wishlist.
Acer debuts 23-inch T230H multitouch monitor

Acer hasn’t exactly been slacking when it comes to Windows 7-related hardware, but it looks like its still putting the final touches on its launch line-up, with it now rolling out a new multitouch monitor to complement its range of laptops and desktops. What’s more, at a full 23-inches, the company’s new T230H monitor best similar offerings from Dell and HP in terms of sheer size, and it packs some respectable specs across the board, including a full 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 2ms response time, a promised 80,000:1 contrast ratio (take that with the usual grain of salt), and an HDMI port in addition to DVI and VGA. Still no official word on US pricing, it seems, but this one will apparently run €349 in Europe (or just over $500).
