MSI serves up Core i5 within 13-inch X-Slim X360 ultraportable

Those lowly Core 2 Duo chips already feel like a long forgotten memory, and frankly, that’s a-okay with us. MSI is helping its seductive X-Slim line get a taste of Intel’s Core 2010 lineup with a Core i5-520UM processor, which sits alongside up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250GB / 320GB / 500GB hard drive, integrated graphics, a 13-inch (1,366 x 768 resolution) panel, HDMI / VGA outputs, a pair of USB 2.0 sockets, 4- or 8-cell battery and an SD / MMC card reader. There’s also built-in WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, twin speakers and a chassis that measures under 1-inch thick. Per usual, MSI is in no hurry to out pricing and release details, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye (or two) out for both.
Panasonic slips Core i5 into ‘world’s lightest’ 12.1-inch Toughbook C1 convertible tablet

We tell ya — all this tablet talk sure has us feeling like it’s 2003. You know, minus all that Y2K hangover stuff. Anywho, Panasonic has today outed what it’s calling the planet’s lightest 12.1-inch convertible tablet PC, with the Toughbook C1 offering the line’s iconic rigidity while boasting 10 hours of battery life, an optional Gobi 2000 mobile broadband module and Intel’s decidedly potent 2.4GHz Core i5-520 processor. All told, the device weighs just 3.2 pounds with a single battery (3.7 pounds with twins), and there’s full support for digitizers and multitouch. Other specs include a shock-mounted, flex-connect 250GB hard drive, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, a WXGA (1,280 x 800) LED-backlit panel, a triple hinge design and the ability to survive a 30-inch plummet. It’s available to (quite literally) smash iPads starting this June, though that $2,499 starting price may be somewhat off-putting to those without copious amounts of disposable income.
Studio 1558 Touch sneaks into Dell catalog with Core i5

Well looky here: an unannounced Studio Touch laptop making its debut on page 5 of Dell’s on-line catalog. The Studio 1558 Touch is flanked by the multitouch Studio 17 Touch. You won’t find any details about the 1558 on Dell’s website or retail channels so what you see above is what you get: Core i5 processor underpinning a Windows 7 Home Premium OS and 320GB hard disk for a $999 starting price. Expect this one to get official soon enough.
Toshiba updates Qosmio and Dynabook laptops with Core i3, Core i5 CPUs

Not really a shocker as far as world events are concerned, but Toshiba‘s announced some new Qosimo and Dynabook series laptops for Japan. First, the 18.4-inch Qosmio G models (the G65 and 97L) will boast brand new 2.4GHz Core i5 processors, GeForce GT 330M graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB HDD, and Blu-ray. Up next, the 16.-inch Dynabook TX will have the 2.13GHz Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and Blu-ray. Both the Qosimo and Dynabook models will sport Windows 7 Home Premium, and are expected for release in August. Pricing is unavailable at this time, as are release details outside of Japan, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.
HP brings out TouchSmart tm2 tablet, upgrades dv6t and dv7t with Core i5

And now, for the hopelessly devoted HP homeboy, we present a trio of lust items. The new hotness on the converitble tablet front — the TouchSmart tm2 — is ready for shipping in exchange for nearly $950, and will endow your life with a 12-inch capacitive multitouch display, a somewhat senescent SU7300 1.3GHz ULV processor, and 3GB of DDR3 memory. Should you dare to stray into higher price ranges, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550 discrete graphics and an SU9600 CPU are also available. Alternatively, you can splash $929 on the 15.6-inch dv6t, which now comes with a 2.4GHz Core i5-520M as standard, as well as free upgrades to 3GB of RAM and 320GB in storage. Graphics options here range up to an NVIDIA GeForce GT 320M with 1GB of onboard memory. Finally, the dv7t matches its smaller sibling’s upgrades but asks for $999 for the base spec, which includes a 17.3-inch display with a 1600 x 900 resolution. So there you have it, something for pretty much everyone.
MacBook Pro with Intel Core i5 processor revealed via Intel promo flier?

Far be it for us to argue with order of operations, but an apparent Intel Retail Edge Program promotional email has revealed a contest where those who pass this month’s training can win one of two MacBook Pros with Intel Core i5 processors inside. Only catch is, that’s a model that doesn’t yet exist — whoops! Don’t know how long the company expects those winners to wait, but we’ve gone ahead and kept our calendars clear for the end of the month, just in case Apple feels the urge to send out any last-minute press conference invites.
HP dv4i leaks out: it’s a $799 dv4 with a Core i5

Not sure why HP didn’t announce this Core i5-powered dv4i with the rest of its CES laptops, but hey — we didn’t get an official announce of that slate last night either, so maybe HP just hates interesting things. Anyway, it’s a dv4 with a Core i5, 2GB of DD3 RAM, ATI Mobility 4550 graphics powering a 1280×800 14-inch display, and an optional Blu-ray drive for $799, so yeah, we’d really want one if it didn’t have the same terrible chrome trackpad as the rest of the dv line. Swing and a miss.
Intel Core i3, mobile Core i5 processors coming January 7

Intel’s Arrandale chips haven’t been the best-kept secret around, and today Chipzilla made ‘em official: the Core i3 and mobile Core i5 will launch on January 7, and we’d guess a bunch of new machines come along for the ride. Although the desktop Lynnfield Core i5 is a quad-core, both the new Core i3 and mobile Core i5 are dual-core — and in a first for Intel, both of the new chips have an integrated GPU core that’s being branded “Intel HD Graphics.” The new GPU is supposedly good enough for “high-end” HTPC use, but manufacturers can add switchable discrete GPUs, so don’t fret too much. Both Arrandale chips have Intel’s latest hyperthreading tech, and the mobile i5 also has the Turbo Boost core-overclocking feature found in the desktop i5 and i7, which redirects power to a single core to boost performance when needed.
We got to see a few Core i3 and i5 laptops and desktops in action at Intel’s pre-CES briefing today, although we didn’t get to run any tests. The mobile Core i5 systems on display were doing a fine job running Call of Duty 4, while the scaled-down Core i3 rigs were playing Blu-ray movies and World of Warcraft — not a bad demo, but we’ll let you know when we see some real numbers.
