iPhone 4 coming to Canada and 16 other countries July 30th

0
Not much of a surprise here, but Apple has now finally revised its previous “by the end of July” iPhone 4 launch timeframe for some of the remaining international countries to a specific date: July 30th. That includes Canada, a whole host of European countries, plus Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. Absent from that list, however, is South Korea, which had been among the “end of July” group, but has apparently been pushed back to an unspecified date due to a delay in receiving government approval.

Consumer Reports confirms iPhone 4 antenna problems — and so do we

Although there’s never been any question that there’s something going on with the iPhone 4′s fancy new antenna system, we really haven’t seen any rigorous testing confirming that the issue is real, severe, and affects every phone. That just changed: Consumer Reports tested three iPhone 4s and several other AT&T phones in their RF isolation chamber that simulates varying levels of signal from every carrier, and found that the iPhone 4 was the only handset to suffer signal-loss issues. What’s more, CR directly says that its findings call Apple’s explanation of a miscalculated signal meter into question since the tests “indicate that AT&T’s network might not be the primary suspect.” CR found that simply putting duct tape over the bottom-left corner is enough to alleviate the issue — we’re guessing that’s Jony Ive’s worst nightmare — and says that while the iPhone 4 has the “sharpest display and best video camera” of any phone it’s tested, it simply can’t recommend the device until Apple comes up with a permanent and free fix to the antenna problem. Ouch.

Headline says it all folks. Obviously the company is going to be getting out in front of this antenna drama (finally). We’ve been invited and we’ll be there, presumably reporting live! It all happens at 10AM PT, Friday the 16th.

iPhone 4 Diamond Edition: white, unlocked, and $20k

Looking for something a bit more eye-catching than a iPhone 4 with a wooden veneer? Then it looks like you can once again thank Stuart Hughes for throwing any subtlety to the wind and going all out with the so-called iPhone 4 Diamond Edition. As you can see, not only does the phone pack a smattering of diamonds (including a bedazzled Apple logo), but it’s a white iPhone 4 (32GB, naturally), and unlocked for good measure. Of course, there’s no guarantees you’ll actually get it before white iPhone 4s become commonplace, but we’re pretty sure this is $20,000 well spent either way.

AT&T: upgrade to iPhone 4 up to six months early

So look, we know the dilemma you’re in. You nabbed that iPhone 3G or 3GS a little late in the game, and now you’ve got to wait until December in order to snag the iPhone 4 at a discounted rate. Lucky for you, Apple and AT&T have worked to give folks like you a little leniency, with existing AT&T users able to upgrade to the iPhone 4 “up to six months early.” In other words, if your current iPhone contract expires at any point in 2010, you’re now eligible to grab an iPhone 4 at $199 (16GB) or $299 (32GB) so long as you agree to stay faithful to a carrier you may or may not loathe for another two years. Good thing you’ve got until the 24th to really think it over.

Update: Good news, addicts! AT&T just pinged us to clarify that so long as your upgrade date is anytime in 2010, you’re now eligible to spend an additional two years paying dues to AT&T. In other words, a fair amount of you will be able to buy one of these at contract price on day one. The full statement is after the break, along with AT&T’s full pricing release.
