Pour one out: T-Mobile G1 no longer for sale

And just like that, the T-Mobile G1 is no more. A quick stock check at T-Mobile USA, Amazon, and a few other retailers confirms that the world’s first Android handset is no longer for sale, marking the end of an era. Of course, it’s been nearly two years since we first saw the G1, and its 528MHz Qualcomm processor and 320 x 480 3.2-inch display have been long since outclassed by the recent crop of high-end Android hardware, but we’re still feeling a little nostalgic. They grow up so fast, don’t they? Take a pause, take a sip, and let’s look back on the original of the species.
T-Mobile Garminfone gets a much-needed price drop to $129

When we got a chance to let the Garmin-Asus Garminfone send us around town for a review, we found it to be about the best nav-focused smartphone on the market. But, its $200 price made it a tough sell compared to many far more powerful alternatives. Now it’s finally dropping to a somewhat more easily palatable asking price of $129.99 with the usual contract restrictions. That’s a great price for a great phone with great navigation, and while we’re still guessing that users here will not get invited out for FroYo anytime in the future, at this price you can afford to buy yourself some real ice cream.
T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide review

Like it or not, T-Mobile has now officially turned its myTouch brand into an entire franchise, thanks to the addition of a second model and an entire line of styled accessories — but it’s not just about the hardware. Far from it, in fact: with the myTouch 3G Slide, the carrier has actually built a custom skin on top of HTC’s Sense for Android 2.1, and all kidding aside, this phone represents one of the deepest carrier-customized experiences we’ve ever seen. Seeing how this phone arguably represents the true successor to the G1 — T-Mobile’s (and the world’s) first retail Android device — it’s pretty important that they get this right, particularly considering how critical it is for a carrier’s bottom line to capitalize on the meaty, profitable midrange of its smartphone lineup. Nokia E73 ‘Mode’ coming to T-Mobile next month?

This is totally out of the blue, but we were just hit up with a screen shot suggesting that T-Mobile USA will be launching a portrait QWERTY handset from Nokia on June 16 known as the E73 ‘Mode.’ As is evidenced with the Nuron, T-Mobile has a tendency to assign trademarkable names to Nokias in its lineup that are known elsewhere in the world by their model number only, so we imagine that this phone will end up launching globally simply as the E73 as it takes over the E72′s throne as Espoo’s top productivity beast. Motorola CLIQ XT comes to T-Mobile for $129.99

Your hopes, dreams, and deepest desires for a keyboardless CLIQ have finally materialized today now that Motorola’s CLIQ XT has reached T-Mobile shops across the country. Interestingly, yesterday’s leaked documentation pegged the date, but not the price — rather than the rumored $99.99, the XT will actually be going for $129.99 on a two-year contract. We guess that’s still not bad for a bona fide myTouch 3G alternative with a 5 megapixel cam — as long as you can get down with Blur, of course.
Nokia 5230 Nuron excites the T-Mobile nervous system

The US will wake up to a fine howdy do from Nokia’s 5230 Nuron now that it’s officially announced for T-Mobile. The device first introduced by Nokia back in August will be available to middle America “in the coming weeks” on T-Mobile’s 3G network. And unlike yesterday’s wee C5, Nuron features a reasonable 3.2-inch, 640 x 360 (nHD) touchscreen for your Ovi Store apps and free Ovi Maps with turn-by-turn navigation to dance upon. Hell, it even has an onscreen keyboard if you want to do something productive like tap out a few emails, enter a URL to surf the web, or update your social networking status(es). While no price or specific date was announced, we’ve seen rumors of a 17 March launch for $70 on contract, or $180 without. Just remember that Nuron runs S60 5th; and with the improved Symbian ^3 touchscreen UI just around the corner (and no clear upgrade path) you’d better really want this device to make the jump whenever it does launch.
Update: Nokia’s own Joe Gallo has confirmed that the Nuron will sell for $69.99 on a 2-year contract at T-Mob.
T-Mobile’s Fender edition myTouch 3G now available for $180

We’d already heard that T-Mobile’s new Fender edition myTouch 3G would be rolling out on January 20th, but we hadn’t had much indication about what sort of premium (if any) it would demand over the standard myTouch. Well, as you can see above, you will have to pay an extra $30 on top of the $150 the regular myTouch 3G currently demands (on-contract, naturally), but that will get you a bundled 16GB memory card, not to mention a genuine 3.5mm headphone jack, a few pre-loaded songs from Eric Clapton and others and, of course, that classy woodgrain finish. Not too shabby for an extra thirty bucks, if you ask us.
Android 2.0 (or maybe 2.1) officially coming to T-Mobile G1?

We don’t know where this is coming from so take it with a grain of salt, but rumor has it from AndroidSPIN that the progenitor Android device, the T-Mobile G1, is destined to officially get an over-the-air update for an Eclair build, Android 2-point-something. It’s not specified which version — whether it’s 2.0 or the Nexus One-tastic 2.1 — will be coming out, but if we had our say, always shoot for the latest and greatest. Hey T-Mo, we know the holidays are pretty much over, but could you validate these whispers for us? Thanks!
WIND Mobile launches in Canada, T-Mobile gets a spectrum buddy

Despite some last-minute drama with the government, Canada’s WIND Mobile has launched today, bringing to the table an interesting new low-cost competitor to the nation’s giant incumbents, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Though its network — based on last year’s AWS auction — lacks the footprint of the bigger guys, the pricing is pretty compelling: its $15 voice plan offers twice the minutes of low-cost competitors Koodo and Fido (which are really just fronts for Telus and Rogers, anyway) and CAD $35 (about $33) wins you unlimited data on your BlackBerry. Speaking of BlackBerrys, WIND is rolling out the Bold 9700 as one of its launch devices alongside the HTC Maple (known as the Dash 3G in the States), the Samsung Gravity, the Huawei U519, and the E181 USB modem. Service is only live in Toronto and Calgary at the moment, but the limited distribution doesn’t seem to be holding people back — WIND’s site has been up and down all morning.
T-Mobile cautiously resumes Sidekick sales at lower prices

After a protracted “let’s be absolutely certain we’re in the clear” period, T-Mobile has gone ahead and lifted its self-imposed moratorium on Sidekick sales following that little meltdown you may have heard about. Oh, and there’s a bonus, too: they’re a little cheaper this time around. The Sidekick 2008 has dropped to $49.99 on contract while the top-of-the-line LX 2009 has shed $25 down to $149.99 on contract, so if you were looking for an excuse to live dangerously with your precious address book, this might be as good of a reason as any. Then again, what are the odds of lightning striking twice?
